Samsung i550

Samsung i550 is an impressive device with a built in GPS, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, HSDPA connectivity, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 from Symbian OS 9.2 which includes the second version of the S60 browser, Flash Lite 2.0 support and a variety of UI improvements. Wonder of wonders is the built in GPS. It still not clear if there will be any accompanying software although the i550 should run any of the numerous GPS / Navigation software available for S60 including Nokia Maps.
The i550 is a WCDMA with 2100Mhz and tri-band GSM phone with the 900/1800/1900 MHz as usually with GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA for data connectivity. USB 2.0 via mini USB and Bluetooth 2.0 including A2DP and AVRCP provide local connectivity options.
For multimedia the phone has a 3.5mm audio jack, a 2.6 inch QVGA screen with 262,000 colours, an FM Radio, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus, 150 MB built in and a microSD card slot for memory expansion with support for SDHC cards that can go up to 4GB. About size, the i550 measures in at 115 ×53 x 13.8 mm in its dimensions making in taller than the similar specified N95, but not as thick. The battery has a capacity off 1200 mAh which should provide enough power for heavy use over a 24 hour period.
The i550 hardware has a few remarkable points:

Samsung SDI double ultra thin flat screen output

Samsung, in one of the most important companies in south Korean. Samsung started mass producing the ultra thin flat screens, the OLED screen, and it would double capacity by next year, sending its shares surging 14 percent. The world's nº.3 maker of plasma display panels is increasingly looking at the super thin screens called AM-OLED as a growth driver, as they produce brighter images and use less power. Samsung SDI is prepared to double monthly output capacity of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) displays to 3 million units by 2008 from 1.5 million now. The company has been plagued by falling prices and weak margins in both plasma display panels (PDP) and traditional cathode-ray tubes for televisions. Forcing them to invest in a new business. Flat screen makers are betting that OLED screens will replace the currently dominant LCD panels on multimedia mobile phones and portable media very soon.

Toshiba 1.8-inch HDD capacity goes up to 120 GB

TOSHIBA announced a new prototype of a hard disk drive using new technology it called Discrete Track Recording (DTR) that increases perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) areal density by 50 per cent over current PMR recording methods. The prototype is a 1.8 inch diameter single platter HDD capable of storing 120 GB, for a PMR areal density of 333 Gb per square inch. The maximum capacity of existing 1.8-inch HDDs is 80 GB with PMR areal densities of 222 Gb per square inch. DTR increases recording density by inscribing grooves in the storage medium. The grooves reduce signal interference, increasing the signal to noise ratio and allowing track pitch to be reduced. DTR is based on research developed by the "Nanoscale Optical High Density Disk Storage System" programme supported by the Japanese government. Toshiba plans to mass produce HDDs based on DTR technology in 2009.
